SSB Preparation II First Chance is the Golden Chance

In SSB Interview, there is a common belief among the aspirants that, “First chance is the golden chance!” Let us examine the statement which is not false in entirety and merits attention.

The first SSB (Services Selection Board) interview attempt is often considered a "Golden Chance" due to a combination of factors, including the candidate's fresh perspective and the assessors' tendency to be less critical to freshers as compared to repeaters. However, it's important to remember that SSB selection is based on an independent assessment of Officer Like Qualities (OLQs) by three independent assessors and candidate’s success depends entirely in doing well in Psychological Tests, GTO Tasks and Personal Interview.

First attempt – Golden Chance : Why ?

  • Innocence and Originality.    First-time candidates often exhibit a more natural and truer personality, which can be perceived positively by assessors.
  • Lack of Preconceived Notions.   Repeaters may develop a set of expectations or biases based on past experiences, potentially impacting their performance and not reflecting their true personality by means of tutored responses to situations.
  • Less Pressure.    While performance pressure exists in any SSB for a fresher or a repeater, first-timers may feel less burdened by past failures and can approach the interview with a fresh perspective.
  • Potential for Liberal Assessment.    Considering the human behavioural aspect of the assessors, It’s believed that assessors might be lenient or flexible with the freshers considering they are still learning the process.

Factors that Contribute to Success – Regardless of Attempt

  • Every Attempt is Important.     Whether it's the first or a subsequent attempt, each interview is a chance to demonstrate suitability for a career in the Indian Armed Forces.
  • Thorough Preparation.    Regardless of the attempt, thorough preparation is crucial. Candidates should focus on understanding the SSB's requirements and developing the OLQs.
  • Candidates should demonstrate the 15 OLQs that the assessors in SSB looks for recommending the candidate.
  • Self-Awareness and Honesty.   Candidates need to be aware of their strengths and weaknesses and be honest in their responses during the interview.
  • Confidence and Composure.   Maintaining composure and confidence throughout the process is essential for making a positive impression.
  • Valuable Experience.    With each attempt, you gain something and there is nothing to loose. While the first attempt is often viewed positively, experience from previous attempts can also be beneficial, providing valuable insights and the lessons learned

Conclusion.     To conclude, it is safe to say, there is subtle but clear advantage which a fresher gets vis-s-vis a Repeater as in the first chance the benefit of doubt goes to the candidate but in the subsequent chances it goes to the wisdom of past assessors. Each attempt is important for Candidate. Furthermore, in each attempt, the process of selecting or recommending the candidate remains the same irrespective the number of attempts. Ultimately, success in the SSB interview depends on the individual's ability to meet the SSB's standards, regardless of the number of attempts.

Good Luck

Best wishes for Uniform
