Lecturette holds significant importance in the Service Selection Board (SSB) interview process. It’s a crucial segment where candidates get an opportunity to showcase their communication skills, knowledge, and confidence on various topics.

Introduction to Lecturette in SSB Interview. Lecturette is a short talk conducted by GTO during the SSB interview process, wherein the candidates are required to present their thoughts. It aims to assess the candidate’s ability to express ideas clearly, organise thoughts coherently and maintain composure under pressure.
Understanding the Purpose of Lecturette. To evaluate candidate’s OLQs - communication skills, reasoning ability, ability to influence the group, confidence, and awareness of current affairs. It also assesses the candidate’s ability to think on their feet and deliver a concise yet impactful presentation.
Briefing by GTO. Lecturette is a short talk on a given topic with a little bit of preparation. GTO has a set of cards, wherein, on each card there are four topics. Candidate may be told to pick a card or may be handed over a card directly by GTO. Thereafter, 03 minutes are given for preparation and 03 minutes to deliver the topic. A warning bell is given after 2.5 minutes to indicate you left with 30 seconds.
Conduct of Task. You all are seated in a line or a hollow square based on sequence of your Chest Numbers in front of an unoccupied chair or a lecture stand. GTO is seated close behind with the cards and bell. When called, the first candidate will walk up, go to GTO, took up a card, and go away for preparation. When 2.5 minutes are over a single bell will be given by GTO, hearing this bell No 2 candidate will get up, go to GTO, pick up the card and go for preparation.
Hearing the bell No 1 candidate will come back to GTO, return the card, showing the chosen topic, proceed to the lecture stand and commence his talk. When 2.5 minutes are over, GTO will give another single bell at which No 3 candidate will go for the card, No 2 will return the card to GTO and No 1 made realize that he has left 30 seconds to conclude his talk. When 3 minutes are over GTO will give two bells, at which No 1 will sit down. In case you finish your talk in less then 3 minutes, you may sit down. The next person will get his three minutes preparation time. During the first candidate’s preparation time GTO may ask you few questions, reply to him intelligently.
Key Components of a Perfect Lecturette
Selection of Topic. Read the topics carefully and select one topic quickly. The topic selected should align with your interests, knowledge, and current affairs. Avoid controversial or sensitive topics that might lead to bias or discomfort among the assessors.
Nature of Topics. Topics can vary widely, covering current affairs, social issues, historical events, or your personal experiences. It’s essential to stay updated and be prepared to speak on any topic.
Structuring your Lecturette. Organise your lecturette into three main parts: Introduction, Main Body, and Conclusion. Start with a brief introduction to the topic, delve into the main points in the body, and conclude with a concise summary.
B. Body. Go in detail and depth, give factual information. Avoid repetition, bring in references and examples. Explain both sides of coin.
C. Conclusion. Conclude the topic somewhere between the 1st and 2nd bell. Avoid abrupt ending. Close the topic in the way it is being build up.
Preparing for the Lecturette
Practicing Delivery. Practice delivering your lecturette multiple times to improve your fluency, timing, and confidence. Pay attention to your body language, gestures, and vocal tone to convey sincerity and conviction.
Delivery of Lecturette
· Engaging the Audience. Capture the audience’s attention from the beginning with a compelling opening statement or anecdote. Use storytelling techniques, relevant examples, and statistics to make your presentation engaging and informative.
· Maintaining Eye Contact. Maintain eye contact with group to establish rapport and convey confidence. Avoid staring at notes or fixating on one spot for too long.
· cSpeaking Clearly and Confidently. Articulate your words clearly and confidently, ensuring that every word is audible and understood. Avoid speaking too fast or mumbling, and use pauses effectively to emphasize key points. Candidate should “Stand squarely” facing the group.
Common Mistakes to Avoid. Avoid common pitfalls such as speaking off the topic, exceeding the time limit, lacking coherence, or displaying nervousness. Practice mindfulness and stay focused throughout your presentation.
GTO’s Assessment. Lecturette is the confirmatory test to confirm the performance shown by the candidate’s during the Group Discussion. The following OLQ’s of a candidate gets highlighted during the Lecturette: Communication Skills, Expression (Verbal & Non-Verbal), Self Confidence, Ability to influence the Group, Reasoning Ability & General Awareness.
